Edna Joel, 71, of Lakota, IA, died Friday, November 14, 2008 at Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center.

Funeral services were held at 1:30PM Wednesday at the Community Chapel, Lakota, with Pastor Ron Wheeler. Burial was at Rice Lake Cemetery in Delavan, MN.

Visitation was Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Winter Funeral Home in Buffalo Center and 1 hour before the service at church.

Edna Joan Joel was born April 5, 1937 at Lakota, Iowa to Alden and Hannah (Bosma) Wilcox. She attended Lakota Community School, then worked as a caretaker for area families. Later Edna worked at Stokley’s in Winnebago and Banquet Foods in Wells.

On April 23, 1960 she was united in marriage to James Mert Joel Jr. at the First Baptist Church in Blue Earth. They spent most of their married life in Faribault County, Minnesota. They had four children: Susan, James, Daniel and Peggy. Edna was a longtime member of the Baptist Church, attending area churches throughout her life. The last 3 years Edna made Lakota, Iowa her home.

Her biggest joy was her family – children, grandchildren, and her great grandchildren, never saying no when asked to baby-sit. Edna was a Gold Star Mother and a member of the Lakota American Legion Auxiliary.

Recently Edna became a resident of Timely Mission Nursing Home, Buffalo Center, where she passed away on Friday, November 14, 2008.

Survivors include 2 daughters: Susan Gonsalez and her husband Ralph of Elmore, MN; Peggy Gonsalez and her husband Sal of Kiester, MN; a son James Joel and his wife Amy of Fairmont, MN; a daughter-in-law Gina Joel of Oregon; 17 grandchildren: Tad, Jayme and fiancé Pam, Isaac, Carlos, Cara, Tatum, Annie, James, Daniel, Ashlee, Justin and special friend Katelyn, Stephanie, Jeremias, Jacob, Jonas, Allysah, and Josiah; 5 great grandchildren: Treden, Xavier, Kaleb, Aric, and Brady, 7 honorary grandchildren and great grandchildren; a grandson-in-law Gabriel Torres; and 2 brothers Roger Wilcox and his wife Elaine of Iowa and Alfred Wilcox and his wife Evelyn of Missouri.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband James, son Daniel, granddaughter Mandy Torres, great grandson Blake, and 2 sisters Geneva and Alberta in infancy.

Edna was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She will be greatly missed, yet we know she is in a better place now, and we will see her again someday!

ANGEL I hear a gentle whisper Its callin out to us Its coming from my grandma She says “Quiet with all the fuss” She says “to keep things simple” Or she will chase you up a tree But then she will hug and kiss you Like she has always done with me She says to keep our heads up But I still ask her why The only thing she tells me Is do it or "I’ll spit in your eye" I know she never means it But it shows me that she cares The only one to keep up with us kids Grandma was always there And though she’s gone to heaven I know my god will part To give to me an Angel To keep within my heart

A poem written from Tad to Grandma. With love I send this message to the woman I look up to the most, even if I am taller than her.
